advice on acoustic treatment

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

advice on acoustic treatment

Post by horea »

Hello everyone,
I am in the process of building my studio and need some advice:

First, the studio looks at this very moment the way you see it in the image below:

The wall separating the vocal booth and the control room is built using more layers of gypsum board + fiberglass (just the way the other 2 walls are treated.)

My 1st question: my initial plan was to treat both side walls of the control room with acoustic foam; in this case would it be an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to have the right side (which is just brick wall) treated the same way (gypsum + fiberglass)? Will this difference cause major asymmetry in the stereo field? (even if they would be both covered in acoustic foam?)

The 2nd: taking into account the very small size of the control room (9.21'x 10.33') do you think it's a good thing to have most of its walls (and ceiling) covered with acoustic foam? If no, how much should I put and where? Please note that despite of the 4" fiberglass layer inside the 3 of the 4 surrounding walls, some unpleasant flutter echoes appear when I clap hands (the clap even gets a certain pitch!) How should I get rid of this? Is there any other method besides the acoustic foam? Various absorbers & diffusers maybe? I know everyone says that using too much high frequency absorbents is a bad idea, but what if I compensate with bass traps for the lower spectrum?

And my last one: what about the low frequency absorption? What kind of bass traps are best suited in this situation (for a small room like this)? Please note that because of the 2 doors being too close to the corner I cannot build a triangle like corner trap.

Best Regards,
Horea

It doesn't appear that the images are appearing, even when we click on the URL. This is because the server that is hosting the images requires a "local referrer" (meaning, you can't link to or include them on another site), probably so that the pop-up ads aren't circumvented. :?

Horea, first off if you use foam, you will need thicker material than using fiberglass (is this the loose, fluffy kind or the compressed, semi-rigid board?)

Second, yes you need balance from left to right; however, this is more for upper frequencies so same treatment in front of different walls will be fine.

Third, what is on your floor and ceiling? (Thinking your flutter may be coming from this) Steve
Soooo, when a Musician dies, do they hear the white noise at the end of the tunnel??!? Hmmmm...
