Drum/Band Practise Room With Studio Section Added Later

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Drum/Band Practise Room With Studio Section Added Later

Post by Nick Garland »

Hi there, I am in need of somewhere to practise drumming and for the band to practise too. I have got about 15ft x 10ft of space to build on. Not huge, but adaquate. I also have about £2000 maybe more to spend, I'm assuming this is a small budget for building a soundproofed room. I am also quite new to the whole idea of soundproofing, I've read this site quite abit and read alot of times about floating rooms with air gaps are the best and so on. So I came up with this drawing of a rough idea of what I think would work, as Im no genious in this area I would be very grateful if you could point out any majour problems, or suggest a few things I have missed. Its only a small segment but you get the idea.
Im not 100% sure on what materials would be used for the actualy walls but its a rough idea of the design, if you would suggest any materials it would be good. I was thinking of using wood for the walls, not sure what wood for cost and no need for planning permission. Here is the idea.

I used to colours to try and differentiate the differnt parts. I would be very grateful for any help that is given.

Thanks alot.

Nick, good first drawing - I can only assume you're somewhere in the UK from your money comment. Better if you could follow the guidelines a bit more

I'm off to the fray for now, but will check in by tomorrow sometime... Steve

Sorry about my profile I forgot to do that  I have read those FAQ's before and tried to make sense of them but Im only 16 and have no idea about constructions etc. Which is why I posted on here as my dad wants to see plans etc before he lays down money and says "ok we can build this". Ill get him to read it and translate it to a more understandbale language for me. I get the part about the more air space the less noise for the walls, but the 2 leaf and quad leaf bit lost me.

Also were aiming to reduce about 200W of noise ( I think thats why my mate measured) but so long as 90-95% is killed its all ok. The nearest part of the building will be a good 5-7M away from the houses and it will take up 15 long, 10ft wide and 9 ft tall
