Control room ceiling: Soundproof or not???

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Control room ceiling: Soundproof or not???

Post by DeepGroove »

Hey all.
I'm debating whether or not to soundproof the ceiling in my soon-to-be-control room...
I definitely plan on proofing the wall between the control room and the live room. My studio is in my basement. My live room is roughly 20x16 with height of 82", and I'll be proofing the hell out of it, the room-within -a- room thing. So I'm not so concerned about the sound coming out of the live room.
The control room won't be used for recording and I'm not so concerned about sound transmitting to and from the upstairs. And, since the live room will be airtight, I'm thinking the sound won't be an issue going to and from the control room.
Am I correct in thinking this?
I can provide any details need about the room if necessary.

As I mentioned in another thread, I had a little flood upstairs and the ceiling in the control room needs to be replaced. I'm using this as an opportunity to expand and do things right (since i half-assed the first time around )
What I am calling the "control room" is actually the Future Control Room, but currently it is the Live room. What I am calling the Live Room, is actually the Future Live room, and it is currently an unfinished area.
So, now that I've confused everyone...Any advice?

Off the top of my head, I'd think you'd have to soundproof your control room ceiling because your live room, although sealed, is only one leaf -- right? Your control room wall makes up the second leaf. Therefore, your live room noise will come into the control room via the ceiling. :?

That's my gut reaction -- it's difficult to say for sure without drawings or photos...

Aside from that -- you have an 82" ceiling? Does that pass code???

Thanks for the replay Sharward.
Um. Oops. Height is 87" to the joists.
I was planning on putting 2 or 3 layers of gypsum board on the ceiling and walls of the live room. Or.. 1 or 2 layers with resilient channel. then stuffing the walls and joists with fiberglass.

So, given that amount of mass, absorption, and possibly airspace, would that give me a reasonable amount of isolation, or no? I figure (and I very well could be wrong :?) that transmission from the live room will be blocked from leaving the room, at least to a decent degree...

There is no doorway directly connecting the live room and the control room. There is a hallway to the side, and a window in the wall b/w the rooms.
Here is a rough sketchup, which I'm still working on.
It doesn't show the control room yet, but the window where the control room connects. The CR is approx. 16x16.

You are correct.

He should build the ceiling in like fashion as the walls.

He'll regret it if he doesnt :)
