Barrier Wall

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Barrier Wall

Post by EJWells »

I have a free standing 30x24 building that I'm converting to a studio.

My question is this. I essentially need to build one barrier wall between the main room and the control room.

If I built it with 2x12 top and bottom plates, staggered 2x6 studs, and (from both outside walls/main room side and control room side) it went: drywall, sheetblock, drywall, rc channel, studs, 6" insulation, would that be better or worse than building 2 seperate 2x6 walls with a few inches of air inbetween them?

Worse. cuz that joining plate would connect to BOTH sides of the wall. By doing the sep 2x6 walls, each wall is isolated from the other. In addition if you do floated floors it makes each room it's own seperate entity.

Make sure you read the sticky at the top of the forum. This info has been covered a myriad of times with pics and diagranms and links to USG and deiiferent STC loss with the different wall designs.....
