False ceiling Ideas.... And Hanger Material ???

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

False ceiling Ideas.... And Hanger Material ???

Post by fisher of men »

I posted this in studio design...... Ill try here.

Hi, couple quick questions,

I am building hangers like these for the control room ceiling and rear wall.
I will add a false ceiling below the hangers. should i use 703 in the 2" or 1" for the false ceiling ? would there be any difference ? other than 1/2 the price

Also any suggestions on how to build the false ceiling or hang the 703 panels would be appreciated. My ceiling is 21'x26'

I was thinking of building a frame with 1x4x8 pine and hang it like you would a regular drop ceiling....... ??

One more ..... The hangers, I found 1/4" (or thinner) MDF should i use this or try to find masonite? Or use linoleum (sp)? sheets.

Thanks in advance,

steve

You could do a suspended ceiling with ceiling grid and lay 2x4 703 panels in it. Armstrong and a couple other manufactures make sound tiles for dbsorption and diffusion that lay right in a standard 2x4 grid. I believe I saw a thread here someplace where someone used these sound tiles. Try a search and It may turn up.

Doing a ceiling this way would allow toy to readily change the acoustics of your room and could help you to tune it too.

ciao,

I've made my own ceiling that's removable, but it's made out of 4X4 squares of 2 layers of OSB and one layer of drywall and they're bolted up. All the seams are sealed with weather stripping. Then to keep the tiles removable I'm not mudding the seams, but putting up oak trim over them. The end result is a rather pretty design on the ceiling.

In this picture I just took of the control room window being built, you can see the ceiling in the control room how I described it. http://sonicclang.ringdev.com/studio/CRwindow04.jpg

This is an alterinative that I've wanted to tell people about for a while. It takes a while to put up, and it's heavy as hell, but my wife says the difference is significant upstairs.

You could always cover the ceiling with cloth.

thanks!

Thats a great looking ceiling.

I will use 703 and i have 2’x 4' panels

I will use cloth to cover the 703 but without a 2x4 frame the 703 will sag.
too many seams

So..... what i might try is to stretch something that breathes across the studs spaced at 4' on center with a 1"x 4" pine to cover the seams.

I was thinking of something like chicken wire or i have seen this black cloth i think it is used for weed control,,, im not sure but i think i read a post on here about someone using this stuff to cover there 703 before covering it with cloth.

Anyway i need something to prevent the 703 from sagging that will breathe as there will be bass hangers above the false ceiling.

Thanks for the help,

steve

See your other thread; weed cloth could also be used though - not sure how much of a "helmholtz" effect the small holes would have... Steve
