Reflectix / foil insulation on inner wall..

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Reflectix / foil insulation on inner wall..

Post by scodav »

Greetings!
I've got a wall which faces a merciless afternoon sun and transmits a lot of heat. Does anyone know if a layer of foil insulation (it's like bubblewrap with foil on either side) applied directly onto a sheetrock wall (frame/stucco outer) would:
a) work well to keep a lower temperature in the room?
b) cause damage to the wall eventually due to heat buildup?
c) do diddley?

Thanks for any help.

Do you have any idea whether the wall's insulated? And are you talking about putting the "space blanket" stuff on the INNER surface of the drywall? Steve

Foil will reflect the light elsewhere and create heat there. I would tint the offending window. Or better yet maybe get a tinted pull down shade so you can have natual light when it's not so direct.

I'm pretty sure there's no insulation inside the wall, just stucco, framing, and sheetrock inside the room. I'm talking about putting the radient barrier on the outer surface of the drywall, inside the room, reflecting the heat back against the wall...

It won't do diddley...........

You need insulation with depth - the problem with this approach is going to be that the air cavity inside the wall will acheive the outside temps, as will the drywall surface - and the foil pack will not be able to keep up with the heat load.

Sorry - but that's just the way it works.

I made it a point to check out this material - the reccomended installation is within the wall cavity - and they stress the importance of providing a sealed air-space on either side of the insulation - thus creating a 2 cavity air system.

Again - it won't work the way you want.

Sincerely,

Rod
