hi
i have a set of Altec Lansing A-7's and i was wondering whether i could use these for my large studio monitors. i have been told that a resistor in series so that the amp powering them has a 16ohm load. i was wondering whether some of you have had any ideas and suggestions. also have any of had any experience with these.

geez i just read my own post and i just realized i can't write anything that makes sense. as for the bit about the 16ohm load i was told that the boxes sound better when in this configuration.
i was also wondering whether some of you have had experience with these speakers as monitors in a studio.
cheers ramjet

Heard a set a LOOOONG time ago, the custom 2" thick rock maple cabinets would have been less resonant than the baltic birch I think; it'd take a pretty fair-sized room to make 'em feel at home.
As to the resistor, it'd need to be pretty herky; if these are 8 ohm nominal (don't recall) then the resistor will drop half the total power, without making any sound in return (except for a possible frying noise
) so you'd need the resistor to be 100 watt if you intend to push them to their limits
(can you say "fractured ear parts"
)
Only reason I can think of for the resistor improving sound might be if damping factor on the amp wasn't high enough; the doubled effective load impedance would give a tighter sound most likely... Steve

Soooo, when a Musician dies, do they hear the white noise at the end of the tunnel??!? Hmmmm...
