Studio design... a few questions...

Post by SoulFood »

I may get a chance to rent a basement... and build a studio there!! :D:D

This basement would be a studio and a rehersal space... This means that it definatelly must not be too dead...

I must also say that this is not an acurate drawing... I haven't measured the room yet, but I don't think I got the rations extremly wrong...

And now my questions...

AFAIK, there is never too much bass trapping... The red surfaces on the picture are broadband bass absorbers (eqivalent to 4 inch 705) in corners, the red "box" is a place for acoustic hangers... (I left out the ones that should be in the upper left corners, because of the visability of other elements in the picture...)

I'm not sure about the yellow ones... I assume the points of early reflections in the mixing position should be 2'' 703 for high frequency absorbtion... (these are the ones right next to the red hanger box...)

Should all the rest be 4'' 705, about 4'' away from the wall? This would give some more bass trapping, but they don't absorb as much high frequencys...

Would it be wise to use the (is it FRK?) "paper" side out for the added reflection of high freqs?

The ceiling is cement and carpet on the floor

Do you see any problems with a room like this?

How much more efficient would these acoustic hangers be compared to just some 705 next to a corner?

How can I calculate the frequency range of an acoustic hanger?

Is it worth it to build soffit mounts for the speakers?

Thank you all very much!

Borut

Hi all!

I'm sort of in a thinking frenzy...

How much would I gain from building soffit mounting and those "hanger boxes" over just using acoustic panels?

This would be alot cheaper and much more portable (i will be only renting...)

Any thoughts?

Hi!

Here's a more detailed picture of the soffit-bass hangars system...

What do you think?

maybe I should desctibe the pic a little better...

All the yellow boards are rigid fiberglass...

The ones that are not "a part of the box" are hangers... Notice that they would be quite big! 2m high and arround a m wide...

Also... The "soffit mount" is just a box with fiberglass in it... what about the front? Shoulod I use something hard and reflective (a wooden board arround the speakers) or would just cloth over fiberglass work just as well - better?

About the "hangers"...

Is their direction important?

How to calculate the resonating frequency of the hanger?

And a final question... do you think I should put a bass trap (the "pressure" kind#) under the monitors? There's a lot of pretty much wasted space there...

Would that be too much bass trapping in the room?

I don't know anything about hangers, so I can't help you there. But as far as I'm concerned it's not possible to have too much bass trapping in most rooms.

Make sure the basement doesn't flood! Before I moved to my current home, I was planning on building a studio with one of my friends in their basement. I went down there to take measurements one day after a thunderstorm, and there was 4" of water in there. (I know, because I had my tape measure! :D ) Needless to say, I changed my plans.

I didn't want to float the floor.

Best,
