Snakes offer better isolation than wallplate?

Post by andy_eade »

I have an existing thread in the Construction forum and I'm starting to figure out how I want to run cable from the CR to the studio. The question is whether I use stage snakes or wall plates.

I'm thinking that the argument for using the stage snakes (I was thinking about 2 or 3 of these EWI PSPX 8-4 )is that there will be less of a whole in the drywall - basically 2 or 3 small holes that I can seal nicely with acoustical sealant. I have a EWI insert snake that I was very impressed with so...

What do you guys think? Obviously Wall plates look a littel more pro, but with the snakes I can bring then in at different ends of the room and, like I said, I'm wondering if there is benefit from having less openings in the drywall.

Thanks,

Andy

I just thought of this. Suppose you used snakes and put a little cabinet on the wall near the floor to store the end of it. The door of the cabinet can be cut short so that there was an inch or so gap at the bottom of it. You could then connect mics or whatever to the snake while it was still in the mini cabinet with the cords going under the closed cabinet door -- or, if you prefer for whatever reason, depending o circumstances, you can pull the snake out of the cabinet and make the connections outside of it, and in that case you can still close the cabinet door because the fatter snake cable will still fit under the door.

In fact, if you make the cabinet a bit larger, you might be able to store cords, mics, stands, and whatever else you might want.

Snakes or Cables

Post by fender1973 »

My only concern with snakes is that if you have a cable or input go bad, it makes a little more troublesome to change. You can surface mount all your patch panels so that the hole in the wall is small and easily sealed. I am using conduit to run all my mic cable from the CR to my drum room. It is easier to replace cables or upgrade capacity. I don't mind sottering all day to get it done also. Either way, let me know what you decide because I am still a couple of weeks away from this part of the project and I am considering all options. Good Luck.
