beginner question about flooring... why use wood?

Wouldnt carpet be better for deadening the sound? Why use wood flooring in a studio?

Deader is not necessarily better.

For recording acoustic instruments, Ethan Winer argues in his Acoustics FAQ that our ears are used to hearing early reflections from a floor, and a reflective floor just sounds more natural for our ears.

I'd say it really depends on what else is happening in the room. If you are building from scratch, hard, reflective floors (ie, wood or stained concrete) with treatments on the walls and ceilings are a proven design.

Actually, i wont be doing a whole lot of live recording other than some podcast stuff... othe rthan that, i do everything with keyboards, computer, and some electric guitar.

I have a perfectly square room im workign with in a basement, built from scratch... my only issues i have with it so far, is I need to build a custom desk to fit all my hardware, computer, keyboard, mixer etc etc....

I think wood has other benefits as well.....easier with rolling chairs, less static electricity than crapet, and easier to maintain.

Wooden floors which have been the fashion of late are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. I would say have a carpet which is far more cosy, remember your house should be a home not a show house out of a magazine. Do what you want not the thing advertisers tell you. Be an individual.

Carpet with special materials can reduce noise in the room. It is no good to choose [SPAM LINK DELETED BY MODERATOR] if you prefer good acoustic quality. Solid wood [SPAM LINK DELETED BY MODERATOR] will be a good idea as some type of hardwood flooring can reduce the noise.

when using carpet don't use a synthetic carpet - use a cotton or wool carpet as synthetic carpets produce static electricity - not good.

Speaking of wasted space...our lhasa apso puppy has a real issue with the synthetic carpet in the living room. Due to the almost winter like conditions here (winter like for our region) the static blows his hair up...kind of like a 20 inch long firecracker that always looks exploded

But he's a lot of fun and cute but bites a lot. Sort of like RO
