home studio layout.

Post by miztian »

Hi guys, my name is Cristian, iam from Chile, iam a sound engineering student and iam 21 years old. My english is really bad so i apologize if iam not clear in my explinations (have some patience). Well i have been recording some bands in the last year, and i have some space in my house to put a little home studio. My main concern is how to use the space that i have in the best way. The construction in the house is very odd to say the least. This is mainly because me and my father build the room that iam living in, so there are many weird shapes the most notorious is the roof, well you ll notice it.

The data: well there are 4 rooms, all really small, (the measures are in the sketch up file), i need to know what is the best way to use them, by this i mean, where should i put the live room and the control room, and if there is another room that i could add. i have been using the black room for control room and the pink room as a live room ( i can actually fit a drum kit in there).

Walls can be destroyed so if you think that i should tear down a wall there is no problem, the only thing is that i need to have a room to put my bed in.

My Budget isnt really much (iam poor) ajaja its about 2 to three hundred dollars. Well thats all, i hope i havent violated any of the rules of the forum if i did iam really sorry.

Well thanks guys, it was really great to find this forum, i have been looking for something like these for a long time.

Bye Cristian

Aloha and welcome to the forum,

Congrats on your studio build. :D

Working on a few ideas. In the meantime, here's some helpful reading - http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html
(Be sure to click on the "Acoustics", "Absorbers" and "Construction" tabs in the left hand column, and then on the tabs that show up at the top of the page.)

http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm

Are the other rooms (green & blue) available for you to use as well?

Happy reading,

Aloha 8)

you might be able to put in a window or door between the "drum room" and the one to the side to enable people to see each other, or (if not structural - supporting weight) just open the wall to create a larger space - depends on if you want some isolation or not.

you probably also want to treat the corners of the rooms with some absorbers - rock wool panels spanning the corner or home insulation rolls stacked. over time you may be able to add another door/window from the CR into the new live room. maybe some slat resonators etc.

do a search and review John's wall unit page and the SAE site.

ok

Post by miztian »

ok guys, i have read a lot of your stuff and its really great, iam learning a lot, i cant wait for the acoustic course in the second semester jejejeje. regarding your questions, all the rooms are usable, i mean there is no problem in using them.

I have one question, that i sholdnt be putting here but iam gonna ask jejeje, one of my teachers had a software that simulated the sound bouncing one the walls, the sound "molecules" changed color each time they bounce against a wall, if there any one of you that has that software or some similar, it would be great.. .. . well thats for simulate the acosutics of the room before doing any construction.

well thanks guys for the responses.

bye

cristian - your design has a corner location with a sloped ceiling. the wall treatments result in a compression wall on one side and the angles of the soffits versus the desk will likely have a small sweet spot as well as increased/unbalanced bass due to the corner.

if you look at Kendale's design, the CR is symmetrical and takes advantage of the sloped ceiling to move the sound around the mix position to create a reflection free zone.

Yes of course, i really like the design that you guys gave me,but the thing is for the control room i want to merge the two rooms with the sloped celing, to make it a little bigger, but iam having trouble with the design, especifically the speaker placement. Iam drawing now and iam gonna post the design for you to take a look.

Thanks again.

Here the only way i could roughly achieve the 60 degrees angle on the speakers, there is really alot of the room wasted, but i have to do it that way because of the tilted ceiling. ... . well let me know what you think, i really apreciate it bye.

Ahp, the red room its suposed to be the live room, there no way to put a window in there but i dont really mind that, we will comunicate thru the microfones. Well thats all.

Bye

Sorry i forgot about one thing, the measures now are correct, wich changes a lot the scenario, the control room is much smaller than the one i put it in the first post sorry about that. But now i have measured all again and those are really the measures.
